My Organisation Journey So Far

Winding road

Your house must be SO Organised

People always say to me, ‘Your house must be SO organised.’ The truth is, I have my moments like everyone else where my possessions get out of hand. Both my husband and I work full time, we have 2 kids and a dog, and life in general is very busy. It’s only natural that things get on top of us every so often. However, I have the knowledge and expertise to keep this to a minimum and by having the correct systems in place for our family, it doesn’t take long to get the house back in order.

Being organised has not always been my strongest trait

As a teenager, my bedroom was one giant floordrobe. It was chaos! Clothes strewn across the floor, piles of books, and one clear path from the door to the bed. I struggled to find anything amidst the mess and it would be a mammoth task if I ever wanted to have friends around. The teenage Sam would have thought it was impossible for her future self to ever be tidy, let alone help others do it. Little did I know that this would be the starting point of my journey towards a more organised life.

More space equals more clutter

After leaving home, I found myself constantly yearning for more space. I started in a 2 bedroom flat with ample cupboards and wardrobes. It even had a loft. It wasn’t long before this was full. The lack of breathing room became increasingly frustrating. Some years later, while pregnant with my first son, we moved to a 3 bedroom house. We were winning, this was the extra space we needed. All our storage problems were solved. A few years after moving in we were in the same situation again.

I realised that it wasn’t the physical space that was the problem but rather the accumulation of unnecessary stuff. It finally clicked—I needed to understand the reason for my clutter issues. It wasn’t about finding more storage solutions or moving to a bigger house; it was about decluttering and simplifying my belongings. This light bulb moment sparked a newfound determination in me to change my habits and consider a more minimalist lifestyle.

The Minimalist Journey

As a family, we embarked on a journey of gradual decluttering. We started small, focusing on one area at a time—a drawer, a closet, or a shelf. With each step, we let go of items that we no longer needed. It was liberating to give myself permission to let go of these things and create more space. It had a great impact on our mental wellbeing.

One month, we took on the #minsgame challenge, inspired by The Minimalists. Every day, we removed a specified number of items from our home (1 item on 1st, 2 on 2nd etc. up to 30 items on 30th), totaling over 435 items in just thirty days. It was eye-opening to witness the impact of intentional decluttering and how it transformed our living environment.

Turning Passion into Profession

Turning Passion into Profession: In 2022, I made the decision to turn my newfound passion for organising into a business. I wanted to help others experience the same liberation and peace that I had found through decluttering. To expand my knowledge and skills, I took a course with Dilly Carter of Declutter Dollies, a renowned expert in the field. I achieved my CPD accreditation in Becoming a Professional Organiser. So Organised with Sam was born.

As a result of this journey, our family has become more mindful of what we bring into our home. We carefully evaluate each purchase, considering its value and impact on our lives. Regularly, we assess our belongings and ask ourselves if it’s time for something to leave our lives for good, creating a more intentional and clutter-free space.

The transformative journey

My organising journey has been transformative, both personally and professionally. From battling teenage chaos to embracing minimalism, I’ve experienced the power of decluttering and the positive impact it can have on our lives. Now, as a professional organiser, I am dedicated to helping others transform their spaces and making life better. Together, let’s create a world where clutter is no longer holding you back from living a joyful life.
